Southampton are on the brink of making their first signing of the January transfer window after agreeing a £19.2m fee with Monaco for out of favour striker Guido Carrillo, reports The Daily Telegraph.
Mauricio Pellegrino is desperate to sign a new striker this month in a bid to solve the club’s goalscoring woes and has identified Carrillo as his top transfer target having previously worked with the forward at Argentine side Estudiantes.
Carrillo has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular since moving to Monaco in 2015 and has dropped even further down the pecking order this season, starting just two league matches.
The deal is not finalised just yet by Southampton expect to sign the Argentine striker before the end of the January transfer window and are also hopeful of signing Spartak Moscow winger Quincy Promes in a deal worth £30m.
Carrillo has scored four league goals despite only managing 417 minutes of action for Monaco this season, the same amount as current Southampton strikers Manolo Gabbiadini and Shane Long combined, who have played 1962 minutes of Premier League action between them.
Of Ligue 1 players that have made at least 15 appearances this term, Carrillo is winning the most aerial duels per 90 (6.9). With a January move on the cards, it’s worth investing in the 26-year-old on Football INDEX before his share price starts to increase.
