Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney has been ruled out for two months with knee ligament damage, according to The Times.
Rooney, 30, was left out of the touring squad that will travel to Denmark to face FC Midtylland on Thursday but it has now emerged that the striker has suffered a serious knee injury.
The England international’s performances have been widely criticised this season but he has found a good patch of form since the turn of the year but will now miss up to two months of the season putting his place in Roy Hodgson’s squad for the Euro’s in doubt.
The news comes as a serious blow to United’s ambitions of clawing back the six-point deficit between themselves and the top four.
Since the turn of the year, only Jermain Defoe (6) and Sergio Aguero (7) have scored more goals in the Premier League than Wayne Rooney (5).
