Real Madrid veteran snubs Inter for Paris Saint-Germain move

Real Madrid defender Pepe has turned down the chance to join Inter in favour of a switch to Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain, reports MARCA.

The 34-year-old was hopeful of securing a contract extension with Madrid but it has now emerged the Portugal international agreed a two-year deal with PSG in the aftermarth of the Champions League final in Cardiff on Saturday.

Pepe, who has spent the last decade at Madrid, has previously been linked with a lucrative move to China but the veteran defender is determined to enjoy one last major tournament with Portugal at the 2018 World Cup after playing a huge part in their Euro 2016 success last summer.

Inter were widely expected to secure the services of the experienced defender but a delay from the club’s new Chinese owners allowed PSG to successfully hi-jack the deal and enable Pepe to remain in Europe and keep his dream of making the World Cup in Russia next year alive.

Injuries limited Pepe to just 14 league appearances this season but in the last 12 months he has won the Champions League twice, Euro 2016 and also La Liga to cap a memorable year for the controversial defender.
