Jose Mourinho has told Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney he should leave if he wants regular first-team football, reports The Sun.
Rooney, who turned 31 earlier this week, has dropped down the pecking order at United after his stumbling start.
The England captain has not started in any of United’s last four league matches and missed their 4-0 defeat to Chelsea with an injury, but Mourinho has now told the United legend he should consider a move away if he wants to continue as a first-team regular.
United face a massive conundrum with Rooney, as the forward still has two-and-a-half years to run on his reported £300,000-a-week contract.
Rooney’s staggering wages could price him out of a move to any clubs in England and in Europe, as a move to MLS appears the best option for the aging forward.
However, the former Everton academy graduate will reportedly hold out at United until he scores four more goals to surpass Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time goalscoring record at United that has stood for 40 years.
Despite a dip in form, only Zlatan Ibrahimovic (4) has played a direct hand in more league goals for United this season than Rooney (3).
