Aston Villa sign Chelsea striker on loan

Aston Villa have announced the arrival of Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham on a season-long loan deal.

Steve Bruce’s side have been heavily linked with a move for the England international and have finally got a deal over the line.

It looked likely at one point that Abraham would stay at Chelsea and provide competition for Olivier Giroud and Alvaro Morata in attack.

Chelsea’s decision to loan Michy Batshuayi to Valencia earlier in the window increased Abraham’s chances of game time at Stamford Bridge.

However, the 20-year-old has opted to drop down to the Championship where he flourished for Bristol City during the 2016/17 campaign.

“I’m excited for this new chapter,” he told the club’s official website. “Aston Villa are a big club that belongs in the Premier League and I’m here to help them achieve that.

“At this stage of my career, I need games and this is a great place for me to come and showcase my talent. I can’t wait to get started.”

Abraham was given his first crack of Premier League football for Swansea last season but failed to make a real impact, netting five times in 31 league games.

The youngster will now provide competition for Jonathan Kodjia in attack for Villa, who are hoping to mount another play-off push this season.

During Abraham’s last stint in the Championship, only Chris Wood (27) netted more times (Abraham – 23).
