Manchester City ace undergoes knee surgery

Manchester City announced on Wednesday night Benjamin Mendy is out for the foreseeable future after undergoing knee surgery in Barcelona.

Mendy completed 90 minutes in last weekend’s Manchester derby but pulled out of France’s squad shortly after linking up with the 2018 World Cup winners.

The 24-year-old missed seven months of last season after suffering anterior cruciate ligament damage in his right knee and there were initial fears Mendy had suffered a similar injury.

City sent Mendy back to Barcelona to see Dr Ramon Cugat, who carried out his treatment last season, and scan results have revealed Mendy has suffered a meniscus injury in his left knee.

While less serious than an ACL injury, Mendy is not expected to play again this year and his absence is a huge blow to City’s title challenge.

City do not have a natural replacement for Mendy at left-back and will now have to use the likes of Danilo, Fabian Delph, Aymeric Laporte and Oleksandr Zinchenko until Mendy makes a full recovery.

Only Ryan Fraser (6) has provided more Premier League assists than Mendy (5) this season.
