Liverpool cool interest in Arsenal target

Monaco winger Thomas Lemar is no longer a priority signing for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp is already looking at alternatives, claims the Liverpool ECHO

The Reds have been heavily linked with a move for Lemar since the end of last season and were expected to firm up their interest last month after Philippe Coutinho joined Barcelona.

Lemar has reportedly even refused a new Monaco deal this week in a bid to force through a move to the Premier League at the end of the season, but Klopp’s side are no longer in the running for his signature.

Arsenal launched a stunning £90m move for the 22-year-old last summer and Klopp is refusing to pay that much for the France international, as he believes that money could be better spent elsewhere.

Lemar has struggled to rediscover the form he showed last season that caught the attention of Liverpool and Arsenal, which has also played a part in their decision to pursue alternative targets.

The Frenchman played a direct hand in 19 league goals last season (nine goals, 10 assists) but is currently well short of that figure and unlikely to match it, having only managed two goals and five assists in 16 appearances.
