West Ham want £35m-rated Premier League striker

West Ham fear they will lose the race to sign Celta Vigo striker Maxi Gomez and are now targeting Bournemouth ace Callum Wilson, claims The Sun.

The Hammers have been heavily linked with a move for Gomez in the last six months but it is understood the Uruguay international wants to remain in Spain.

Celta rejected West Ham’s opening £25m bid and Gomez is now expected to join Valencia, who can offer Champions League football next season.

Manuel Pellegrini is still determined to bolster his offensive options for the new campaign and is now focussing his attention on Wilson.

The 27-year-old was a revelation for Bournemouth last season and has even forced his way into Gareth Southgate’s England squad.

Wilson, who has fought back from two serious knee injuries in his career, is valued at £35m but Bournemouth will be reluctant to sell their star asset.

Bournemouth will argue West Ham are in no better position than themselves and if Wilson does leave it should be to one of the best clubs in the league.

Chelsea have previously been linked with a move for the England international but are facing the prospect of starting their Fifa-imposed transfer ban this summer.

Only Raheem Sterling (27) played a direct hand in more Premier League goals than Wilson (23) of all English players last season.
