United midfielder returns from international duty injured

Belgium manager Roberto Martinez has revealed Marouane Fellaini has withdrawn from the squad and returned to Manchester United with a calf injury.

Fellaini had been preparing for Belgium’s World Cup qualifier against the Netherlands and Estonia before being forced out of contention after picking up a leg injury in United’s 3-1 win over Swansea on Sunday.

“Fellaini picked up an injury against Swansea City and will go back to his club! We have a core of 24 players is enough,” said Martinez.

The 28-year-old is now thought to be an early doubt for United’s next match against Arsenal and comes at a time where Jose Mourinho has reportedly asked for an inquest into the state of United’s medical department.

Fellaini’s future at Old Trafford has been in doubt almost as soon as he signed from Everton in 2013, but the controversial midfielder has featured prominently under Mourinho, starting eight of their 11 league matches.

In the last six Premier League seasons Fellaini has committed at least 56 more fouls than any other player (322).
