Swiss star on United's radar

Manchester United could make a move for Wolfsburg left-back Ricardo Rodriguez in January, reports the Sunday Mirror.

The Switzerland international is widely considered one of the best in his position in Europe and has maintained a high level of consistency with a series of fine performances in the Bundesliga this season.

Only Marcel Schafer (7.61) has gained a better WhoScored rating of all Wolfsburg players than Rodriguez (7.33), who continues to impress for club and country.

The reports come after Louis van Gaal admitted he may need to sign a new left-back when the transfer window reopens.

Luke Shaw was United's starting left-back, but suffered a broken leg in the 2-1 Champions League defeat to PSV, leaving the Dutchman short of options at the back.

"I was convinced Shaw would have a very good season. Because of that I didn't a second player for left-back because I thought he would play more or less every game," Van Gaal said.

"Maybe now we have to buy a new left-back."
