Chelsea defender has future in Germany

Borussia Monchengladbach sporting director Max Eberl has claimed Andreas Christensen could return to the club next season rather than stay at parent club Chelsea.

Christensen’s two-year loan deal at Gladbach is due to expire at the end of this season and he will return to Chelsea for pre-season after Antonio Conte’s side turned down Gladbach’s £14.3m offer to make the switch permanent last summer.

The 21-year-old is highly thought of at Chelsea and is expected to feature in their first-team plans in the seasons to come, but Gladbach will be monitoring his situation over the summer with a view to bringing him back to Germany.

“It is certain that we will lose Andreas at the end of the season, because he has to return to Chelsea,” Eberl told Kicker, via Get German Football.

“But, if he complete pre-season at Chelsea and then does not play the role that he hopes to, we have the chance to talk again as a club where he has gained two years’ of good experience.

“It could also be that he plays. Or it may be the case that they want to sell him for €25m (£21.3m), then we would be out of the race.

“But there are still these opportunities, because Andreas is incredibly comfortable in Gladbach and he, I think, would like to stay in Gladbach.

“He would also like to be a regular in Chelsea’s starting XI, but they have just become champions who will play in the Champions League and will also want to achieve something next season. In any case, Andreas feels very comfortable in Gladbach.”
