Bayern Munich have announced Jerome Boateng will be out for a period of six weeks after undergoing surgery on a pectoral injury.
Boateng, 28, has missed Bayern’s last five matches since featuring in a shock 3-2 defeat to FC Rostov in the Champions League nearly a month ago.
The Germany international has been plagued by the injury for weeks before it was discovered the Bayern defender would require surgery, which forced him out of Bayern’s 1-0 win over Darmstadt at the weekend.
“Jerome Boateng has been operated on the tendon of the right pectoral muscle by Prof. Dr. Andreas Imhoff this Tuesday in Munich,” a statement read on Bayern’s official website.
“Bayern doctor Dr. Volker Braun” “The operation went very well. If the healing process is optimal, Jerome Boateng will not be available for about six weeks.”
It means the former Manchester City defender will miss Bayern’s crucial clash with league rivals RB Leipzig on Wednesday in the club’s final match of 2016.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side do not play competitively again until January 20, by which point Boateng’s will have almost completed his rehabilitation.
Boateng has come in for criticism this season for his below standard performances and that has shown in the numbers. Bayern are unbeaten in the 10 league games they have played without the German in the starting XI, compared to a win ratio of just 40% when he has started at the heart of the Bayern defence.
