Burnley set to return with £15m bid for Championship goalscorer

Burnley will ramp up their interest in Leeds United striker Chris Wood by returning with an improved £15m offer, reports The Daily Mirror.

The Clarets, who are after a new striker after selling Andre Gray to Watford for £18m, have already had a £12m bid for Wood rejected by the Championship side are bracing themselves for more offers.

Wood is keen to test himself in the Premier League and is reportedly frustrated that Leeds have so far stood in his way of achieving the biggest move of his professional career.

Leeds are reluctant to lose the New Zealand international, particularly this late into the window, as it would leave their promotion hopes in tatters despite the fact the season is only three games old.

Nevertheless, Burnley are confident of completing a £15m swoop plus add-ons for Wood before the start of next week, in what would be a new club-record deal for Sean Dyche’s side.

Burnley had widened their search for a new striker to Spain where they had a bid rejected for Deportivo La Coruna striker Florin Andone and have returned to Wood after being told they would need to match Andone’s reported €30m (£27.4m) release clause.

Wood has scored more goals (28) than any other Championship player since August 2016 (excluding play-offs).
