Real Madrid confirm De Gea deal is off

Real Madrid have confirmed that a deal for goalkeeper David de Gea is now off.

The Manchester United goalkeeper had been expected to move to the Spanish side before the transfer window closed, but a paperwork gaffe means any deal this summer is impossible.

De Gea will now remain at Old Trafford for the time being, though it remains to be seen whether he will come straight back into Louis van Gaal's starting XI.

Summer signing Sergio Romero has made a starting spot his own since his arrival, but has looked shaky at times in between the sticks.

De Gea is now set to return to United after the international break to fight for his spot in the first team.
