Southampton plot ambitious move for ex-Borussia Dortmund boss

Southampton are on the verge of sacking Claude Puel as their manager and want to speak to former Borussia Dortmund head coach Thomas Tuchel about becoming his replacement, reports SportBild, via Get German Football.

The Premier League outfit are in the process of sorting Puel’s severance package before they can officially confirm his departure and the Southampton hierarchy are interested in discussing the soon-to-be vacant position with Tuchel.

Tuchel, who is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young coaches in Europe, was sacked as Dortmund head coach just days after leading the club to the DFB-Pokal title last month and has already been heavily linked with the vacant post at Bayer Leverkusen.

Arsenal were heavily linked with a move for Tuchel earlier last season when it emerged Arsene Wenger may not continue as manager at the north London outfit but the Frenchman has since agreed a new two-year extension at the club.

While the similarities between Southampton and Dortmund are there, it remains to be seen whether Tuchel would see the Premier League outfit as a step backwards in his career. Southampton finished the 2016/17 campaign with their lowest points tally (46) in four years and 17 fewer than in 2015/16 (63).
