Arsenal and Liverpool target £40m-rated goalkeeper

Arsenal and Liverpool will lock horns for the signature of Stoke goalkeeper Jack Butland at the end of the season, reports The Sun on Sunday.

Petr Cech’s alarming decline has made signing a new goalkeeper a priority for Arsenal in the summer, while Jurgen Klopp will also address his own concerns between the sticks.

Liverpool only signed Loris Karius 18 months ago but the German shot-stopper has struggled to adapt to English football.

Klopp has failed to nail down a reliable goalkeeper during his time at Anfield but has given Karius the chance to win over his trust for the remainder of the campaign.

However, Liverpool are monitoring Butland’s progress at Stoke with a view to completing a stunning £40m move for the England international.

The 24-year-old has spent the last five years at Stoke and is a strong contender to be England’s No.1 at the 2018 World Cup following Joe Hart’s own demise.

Only Lukasz Fabianski (99) and Jordan Pickford (86) have made more saves than Butland (85) in the Premier League this season.
