Valencia win race to land Madrid winger

Valencia have fended off competition from Villarreal and Sevilla to sign Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev on loan until the end of the season, the club have announced.

Cheryshev, 25, has only featured in 70 minutes of football across the league and Champions League this season, with his biggest contribution coming in the Copa del Rey. The Russia international started in their tie with Cadiz, but was later ruled to be ineligible for the tie having picked up a suspension in the cup last season while on loan with Villarreal.

Madrid put all the blame at the doorstep of Villarreal, which all but quashed their attempts to bring the winger back on loan this season and Valencia also overcame interest from Sevilla to land the gifted creator.

Gary Neville’s side are currently 11 games without a win in La Liga - the second current longest winless run in Europe’s top five league - and Cheryshev will undergo his medical on Tuesday before becoming their second arrival of the transfer window.

Of players to have played in at least 1,000 minutes in La Liga last season, only three required fewer minutes per assist than Cheryshev (188 mins).
