Montpellier president Louis Nicollin has confirmed Morgan Sanson’s proposed move to Marseille is on the right track before the close of the January transfer window.
Sanson, 22, has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this month but now appears on course to join Marseille as their new owners look to invest heavily into their squad this month.
Montpellier feel they cannot deny Sanson the chance to move to one of the biggest clubs in France but will only allow the creative midfielder to leave if their €15m (£12.3m) valuation is met.
“He is a good guy, clever and I cannot refuse him the possibility of going to a big club where he will likely triple his salary,” Nicollin told Midi Libre, via Get French Football.
“Because Marseille is a big club. He will have a career like [Didier] Deschamps did. Or [Marcel] Desailly. After two or three years, he will go abroad. Financially, we will find an agreement with Marseille. I want €15m, even if it is Laurent, my son, who is doing the deal, he will leave.
“It will allow us to sign four new players as well as the young lad from Laval [Mukiele] who has already arrived. It will be a defender, two midfielders and an attacker who will certainly be [Jonathan] Ikone.”
Sanson has played a direct hand in 10 goals in 20 league appearances for Montpellier this season, while seven assists is only bettered by Nice’s Jean Michael Seri (8) in Ligue 1.
