Werner agrees Chelsea move ahead of Liverpool and Manchester United

RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner has agreed to join Chelsea at the end of the season, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Werner has emerge as one of the most sought after strikers in Europe this season and is set to sign a five-year deal worth around £200,000-a-week with Chelsea until the summer of 2025.

The Germany international was holding out for a move to Liverpool but Jurgen Klopp's side have opted against pursuing the Leipzig frontman.

Klopp is keen on Werner but the Premier League champions-elect are ready to move cautiously through the summer following the Coronavirus pandemic.

The £49m release clause in Werner's existing Leipzig deal is due to expire on June 15 and Chelsea have made it clear they will trigger it by then.

Werner is one of only two players in Europe's top five leagues this season with a hat-trick of hat-tricks, along with Lionel Messi, and currently trails Robert Lewandowski by five goals in the Golden Boot race.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was depserate to sign a new striker in January and missed out on Werner and Napoli's Dries Mertens.

Werner's impending arrival for the 2020/21 campaign will almost certainly mean at least one of Olivier Giroud or Michy Batshuayi will leave Chelsea over the summer.

Giroud only recently extended his Chelsea contract by 12 months but it was a move to retain some value in the 2018 World Cup winner.

Neither Giroud nor Batshuayi feature in Lampard's long-term plans at Stamford Bridge and signing Werner represents a huge coup for the Blues.

Bayern Munich and Liverpool started the year favourites to land the 24-year-old, while Manchester United were also monitoring his future until extending Odion Ighalo's loan spell last week.
