Crystal Palace defender Pape Souare is unsure whether he will ever be allowed to play football again following injuries sustained in a horrific car incident in September.
Souare, 26, is expected to miss the remainder of the season after breaking his thighbone and jaw in a crash on the M4 near London.
The Senegal international was taken to hospital and initially ruled out for six months by Palace manager Alan Pardew, although the full-back admits he is still unsure whether he will be able to play again.
“I don’t know about my injury. I don’t know if I can get back or not,” Souare told BBC World Service. “I just put everything in the hands of God and we will see.”
“I got my leg broke, and my jaw, and I couldn’t eat for the first month, but now I can eat, I can try to eat a little bit. The thing about my leg, it’s getting there. I’m trying to do the work to make it stronger with the physio at the club.
“I remember the helicopter coming to get me. I remember the door on my leg. I remember the guy who was coming to talk to me and I said to him I’ll keep in touch with him as he helped me a lot before the helpers come. I remember they cut the roof to take me out. I was very lucky because that was a very crazy shock.”
Without Souare, Palace’s struggles in the league have continued. Pardew is now on the verge of the sack and it seems unlikely at this stage to think he will still be managing the club when a decision will be made on whether the defender can return to full training.
Of Palace players to have started at least 30 league games in the last three seasons only three have required fewer minutes per interception than Souare (1 every 37 mins).
