Monaco announce arrival of Chelsea target

Monaco have announced the arrival of CSKA Moscow midfielder Aleksandr Golovin on a five-year deal running until June 2023.

Golovin was a revelation at the 2018 World Cup and watched his reputation soar following several standout displays for hosts Russia.

Chelsea were the frontrunners to sign the creative midfielder but have lost out to Monaco, who have reportedly shelled out a reported €30m (£26.6m) fee.

“I am very happy to sign at AS Monaco,” he told the club’s official website. “This is a new adventure for me that I approach with a lot of ambitions.

“I am now very much looking forward to meeting the staff and my new teammates and to get going.”

Golovin is the third new midfielder Monaco have signed this summer following the arrivals of Pele and Jean-Eudes Aholou from Rio Ave and Strasbourg, respectively.

Monaco have signed 10 players in this transfer window but Golovin is easily the most eye-catching of their summer business.

Golovin played a direct hand in three goals in four appearances at the 2018 World Cup (one goal, two assists), garnering a WhoScored rating of 7.50 in the process.
