Atalanta plot audacious move for Juventus icon Buffon

Atalanta want to sign Gianluigi Buffon on a free transfer this summer, claims Gianluca Di Marzio.

The Nerazzurri are planning for their first ever campaign of Champions League football next season after finishing third in Serie A in 2018/19.

Atalanta switched between Pierluigi Gollini and Etrit Berisha in goal last term and want to address who is No.1 for next season.

Buffon will be a free agent next month after Paris Saint-Germain confirmed his departure a year before his contract is due to expire.

The former Juventus goalkeeper will not be short of offers but Atalanta are trying to prise the iconic shot-stopper back to Italy.

It’s likely that next season will be Buffon’s last before hanging up his gloves for good and he will will want to end his career as first-choice.

The 41-year-old only made 17 league appearances for PSG last season and only kept six clean sheets in that time.

However, only Walter Benitez (79.5%) had a better save success rate than Buffon (77.3%) in Ligue 1 last season.

Furthermore, of goalkeepers that made at least five appearances in Europe’s top five leagues last season, Buffon had the best pass success rate (90%).
