Manchester United to rival Chelsea for PSG outcast Cavani

Manchester United are exploring the possibility of signing Edinson Cavani from Paris Saint-Germain this month, claims The Daily Telegraph.

Cavani has entered the final six months of his current PSG contract and has already been told he will not be offered a new deal.

The Uruguay international has dropped completely out of favour under Thomas Tuchel this season and wants to leave the club this month.

Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are currently vying for his signature but United have now entered the race, albeit with caution.

United are desperate to avoid another situation similar to Alexis Sanchez where they pay huge wages to an ageing player on the decline.

However, Marcus Rashford's long-term back injury has left United desperate to get a striker through the door in the last week of the transfer window.

At this stage it remains unlikely United will step up their interest for Cavani due to the financials required for someone that turns 33 next month.

Cavani, who also has injury problems, has been limited to just nine league appearances this season and only four of those have been starts.

The Uruguayan striker has been a formidable goalscorer for PSG ever since joining from Napoli in 2013 for £55m.

In fact, he has scored at least 45 more goals than any other player in Ligue 1 in that time (136).
