Liverpool concede defeat in pursuit of top goalkeeping targets

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will return to the drawing board in his search of a new goalkeeper after conceding defeat in pursuit of Roma star Alisson, claims The Daily Mirror.

Alisson has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield in the last 12 months and Liverpool have rekindled their interest since last month’s Champions League final.

Klopp has made signing an upgrade for Loris Karius a priority this summer but is unwilling to match Roma’s £70m valuation of Alisson, which would require Liverpool to shatter the world record fee for a goalkeeper.

Liverpool are also monitoring the future of Jan Oblak but would similarly have to pay an unprecedented sum for a goalkeeper to have any chance of luring the Atletico Madrid ace to Merseyside.

Reports emerged over the weekend linking Liverpool with a move for Burnley goalkeeper Nick Pope, who would be significantly cheaper than Klopp’s main targets.

Liverpool will almost certainly have to sign a new goalkeeper, as Simon Mignolet looks destined to leave after dropping down the pecking order at the club last season.

Nevertheless, Klopp has returned to the drawing board to reassess his goalkeeping targets with both of his first choice targets seemingly out of reach for the Premier League giant.

Of goalkeepers that made at least five appearances in Serie A last season, Alisson had the best save success rate (80.2%).
