Derby chasing Shackell signature

Paul Clement is looking to make Burnley captain Paul Shackell Derby County’s seventh signing of the summer after confirming an interest in the defender.

The former Real Madrid assistant manager is looking to strengthen his squad in every department and has earmarked the Burnley centre back as the ideal candidate to bolster his backline.

“I don’t know anymore news than it’s going,” the Rams boss told BBC Radio Derby when quizzed about the deal.

“Hopefully it can be brought to a conclusion sooner rather than later.”

“I’d like to have a couple of systems and choose those based on whose performing well, the opposition we’re playing and whether we’re playing home or away.

“We want to be comfortable with a couple of systems and have that adaptability at the start of games, to prepare going into fixtures and also to change if required.”

The 31-year-old was one of Burnley’s standout performers in the Premier League last season, finishing the campaign as the second-highest WhoScored.com rated defender of players to have started in more than 30 Premier League games (7.27).

Added to that, he completed at least 66 more clearances than any other player in Europe's top 5 leagues (437), blocked more shots than anyone in the Premier League (52) and only two other players won more aerial duels than Shackell in England's top-flight (169) last season.
