Southampton join race for Napoli target

Southampton have expressed an interest in signing Lille right-back Kevin Malcuit, reports Gianluca Di Marzio.

Mark Hughes has already spent more than £50m on four new players this season but is keen to strengthen his squad further before next week’s deadline.

Malcuit has already been linked with a move to Napoli this summer, but the Serie A giants will only consider a move if their other targets fall through.

Southampton, meanwhile, are serious on the 27-year-old, although it remains to be seen where he would fit in at the club.

The Saints already have Cedric Soares at right-back, which is where Malcuit predominately plays, unless Hughes plans to play the Lille ace in a more advanced position.

Malcuit, who has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United, only joined Lille 12 months ago but has impressed in France in the last two campaigns.

In fact, only Monaco defender Djibril Sidibe and Paris Saint-Germain ace Dani Alves (both seven) provided more assists than Malcuit (6) of all defenders in Ligue 1 last term.
