England international confirms Bournemouth return

Jermain Defoe has confirmed he will join Bournemouth this summer after completing his medical with the Premier League outfit.

The 34-year-old is currently preparing for England’s upcoming matches against Scotland and France but has been heavily linked with a move to Bournemouth after it emerged he could leave Sunderland for free this summer following their relegation.

Defoe, who spent 12 months on loan at Bournemouth in the 2000/01 campaign, has been in immense form for Sunderland over the last two years and has even forced his way back into the international fold, but will now become a Bournemouth player for the second time in his career.

“Well, yeah,” Defoe told BBC Sport when questioned whether a move to Bournemouth was still happening. “It’s out there, a lot of people obviously knew. I did a medical and said when this is finished and I’ve had a break, come July everyone will know anyway.”

West Ham failed in their attempts to re-sign Defoe in the January transfer window and there were suggestions Crystal Palace would look to land the Sunderland striker this summer, but Eddie Howe’s side have won the race for the Premier League icon.

Only six players have scored more goals in Premier League history than Defoe (158) and only one of those are still playing (Wayne Rooney - 198).
