Everton confirm Rooney agreement with DC United

Everton have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Major League Soccer franchise DC United for the sale of Wayne Rooney.

Rooney only re-signed for Everton 12 months ago but endured an underwhelming first season back and does not feature in Marco Silva’s plans next term.

The 32-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to America in the past and is now on his way to Washington to finalise a move to DC United.

“Everton and Wayne Rooney have reached an agreement for the player to join MLS side DC United on a permanent transfer,” a statement read on Everton’s official website.

Rooney still had 12 months left to run on his Everton contract but has agreed to take a significant wage cut to join DC United on a three-and-a-half-year deal until 2021.

DC United have made a disastrous start to the season and are banking on Rooney’s arrival to kickstart their season.

Rooney is expected to make his debut for the MLS strugglers in the inaugural game of their new 20,000-seater stadium on July 14 against Vancouver Whitecaps.

Despite his struggles for Everton last season, Rooney finished the campaign as the club’s highest scorer in the Premier League (10).
