Roma have confirmed Alessandro Florenzi has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will undergo surgery on Thursday.
Florenzi, 25, was stretchered off in the dying embers of Roma’s 3-1 win over Sassuolo and is now set to miss the majority of the season.
Roma were initially hopeful the injury sustained was not as serious as first feared, but scan results have since confirmed the worst.
“Alessandro Florenzi underwent diagnostic tests during the night which revealed he has ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee,” a statement read on the club’s official website.
“The 25-year-old sustained the injury during the second half of Roma’s win at Sassuolo on Wednesday evening. Florenzi will undergo surgery on Thursday.”
Florenzi has developed into a key player for Roma in the last five years and has been one of their most consistent performers in that time.
In fact, in nine league appearances this season he has registered as many assists (3) than he managed in 33 games last time around.
