Real Madrid star rebuffed PSG advances

Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane has revealed he turned down a move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2011.

Varane, 22, is due to line up against the Ligue 1 champions on Wednesday night and could have been in the PSG side had they sold their vision better to the France international.

“PSG were interested in signing me, but we never entered negotiations,” Varane told Le Parisien.

“The Qatari project at the club was all still a bit unclear to me. I could not see myself join PSG, because I did not know how they would develop.

“PSG did not suit me at the time and the move to Real Madrid was a logical choice.”

Varane is widely tipped as one of the best central defenders in Europe and has started to nail down a starting berth for Madrid this season with fitness concerns surrounding Pepe.

Moreover, only Toni Kroos (96.6%) has a better pass success rate than Varane (94.8%) of Madrid players to have started both of their Champions League fixtures this season, accentuating his statistically calculated strength of ‘passing’.
