Napoli interested in sensational swoop for AC Milan star

Napoli are monitoring contract talks between Gianluigi Donnarumma and AC Milan with a view to making a sensational swoop for the teenage goalkeeper this summer, reports Tuttosport, via Football Italia.

Maurizio Sarri is keen to sign a new goalkeeper to replace Pepe Reina for next season and Napoli have already been linked with moves for Wojciech Szczesny, Lukas Skorupski and Bernd Leno in recent weeks.

However, Napoli are also waiting on the future of Donnarumma, who has established himself as one of the most exciting young talents in world football this season.

The 18-year-old has now been called the heir to Gianluigi Buffon’s throne for the Italy national team and has already been linked with a blockbuster move to some of Europe’s biggest clubs following his immense performances for Milan this season.

Reports have emerged suggesting Milan would be willing to bench Donnarumma for the whole of next season if he fails to agree terms to a new deal by the end of next month, which would effectively mean the teenager could leave the club on a free in the summer of 2018 when his current deal is due to expire.

While a move to the likes of Manchester United or Chelsea would grab all the headlines, Napoli believe they hold an advantage in the race to land the young goalkeeper. Donnarumma is from Castellammare di Stabia, which is a bay of Naples, so a deal to join Napoli would represent a move home.

No goalkeeper has a higher WhoScored rating in Serie A this season than Donnarumma (7.06).
