Marseille star set for contract talks

Marseille will sit down with Florian Thauvin’s camp to discuss terms for a new contract after the current season has finished, reports Foot Mercato, via Get French Football.

Thauvin has enjoyed a real renaissance period since returning to Marseille following a disastrous 12-month stint at Newcastle and has even earned international recognition with Didier Deschamps’ France squad off the back of his performances this season.

The 24-year-old returned to Marseille on an initial season-long loan deal from Newcastle at the start of the season but the Ligue 1 giants will trigger their clause to make the switch permanent and are already looking to hand the winger improved terms.

It has been Thauvin’s best season to date during his short professional career and Marseille are understandably keen to retain his long-term services as they plot their way back to the summit of French football.

Thauvin has weighed in with a hugely impressive 23 goals in 37 league appearances for Marseille this season (15 goals, eight assists), while only Dimitri Payet (7.52) has garnered a higher WhoScored rating for the club in league competition than Thauvin (7.38). Not only that, but he has also won the WhoScored Man of the Match award the most times in Ligue 1 this term (9).
