Tottenham table blockbuster deal for Atletico midfielder

Tottenham are prepared to make Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez their highest paid player in order to secure his services in the summer, according to Spanish newspaper AS, via The Daily Mirror.

Saul, 21, has enjoyed a sensational campaign under Diego Simeone at Atletico this season and he has previously been linked with a move to Manchester United.

Atletico are keen to extend the youngster’s contract at the end of the season, which still has four years left to run, and increase his release clause which is currently €45m (£36m).

However, Spurs are reportedly hopeful of taking advantage of any unrest by offering the midfielder a staggering £200,000-a-week five-year deal, which would make him by far and away their highest paid player.

Only two players aged 21 and under have completed more tackles across Europe’s top five leagues than Saul this season (93).
