Reading appoint Paul Clement as Stam’s successor

Reading have announced they have appointed former Swansea head coach Paul Clement as Jaap Stam’s replacement.

The Royals sacked Stam on Wednesday with the club only three points above the relegation zone with eight games remaining.

The Championship strugglers have acted quickly to find Stam’s successor and have turned to Clement, who has a wealth of experience at big clubs.

“I’m delighted to have secured the services of a hugely experienced forward-thinking manager like Paul, who I have personally worked alongside during our time spent at Chelsea," Reading chief executive Ron Gourlay told the club's official website.

“Not only has he coached at some of the greatest clubs in Europe, winning trophies, league titles and European honours and working with some of the greatest players in the world, fundamentally he also has a rich understanding of English football having managed in both the Championship and the Premier League in recent years.

“Now, everyone at Reading Football Club is fully behind Paul and his squad of players as, together, we initially set our sights on an eight-game battle and continue to strive to take this club forward.”

Clement has been out of work since being sacked as Swansea manager in December.

The 46-year-old won just one of his final 11 matches in charge of the Premier League outfit and has only triumphed in 27 of his 73 matches as a manager in charge of Swansea and Derby.
