Arsenal set to miss out on Barcelona defender

Arsenal are ready to pull the plug on their pursuit of Barcelona outcast Samuel Umtiti due to the player's wage demands, claims Sport.

Barcelona are keen to offload Umtiti as one of several high profile departures to fund their summer transfer activity.

Umtiti has long been linked with a move to the Premier League but the France international is unlikely to head to Arsenal.

The Gunners are operating on a tight financial budget and wage demands threaten to derail talks for a number of their transfer targets.

Mikel Arteta's side are already struggling to get a deal over the line for Chelsea winger Willian and now look set to end their interest in Umtiti.

The 26-year-old has barely featured for Barcelona over the last 12 months due to a serious knee injury and he has looked a shadow of his former self when he has been able to play.

Added to Umtiti's enormous wage demands, Barcelona are also looking to command €50m (£43.5m) for his signature.

Of players to have made at least 10 LaLiga appearances this season, only Toni Kroos (93.6%) has a better pass success rate than Umtiti (92.6%).
