Paris Saint-Germain confirm Buffon’s departure

Paris Saint-Germain have announced iconic goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon will leave the club when his contract expires at the end of this month.

Buffon only joined PSG from Juventus last summer and the Ligue 1 champions had an option to extend his stay by a further 12 months.

The 41-year-old didn’t make the desired impact at PSG and it has now been decided he will leave the club this summer.

“Following joint discussions, Paris Saint-Germain and Gianluigi Buffon have agreed not to renew the legendary goalkeeper’s contract which expires on 30 June 2019,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

Buffon’s departure will put Manchester United on red alert as PSG have been heavily linked with a move for their No.1 goalkeeper, David de Gea.

De Gea has entered the final 12 months of his current deal and has turned down United’s best offer of a new contract.

Thomas Tuchel’s side are willing to match De Gea’s wage demands and will reportedly test United’s resolve with a £60m bid this summer.

PSG are understood to have already agreed a Bosman transfer with United midfielder Ander Herrera and are now expected to step up their interest in De Gea.

Buffon made 17 league appearances during his only season for PSG and only managed six clean sheets.

However, only Walter Benitez (79.5%) had a better save success rate than Buffon (77.3%) in Ligue 1 last season.
