Liverpool line up shock bid for England defender

Liverpool are interested in signing Queens Park Rangers defender Steven Caulker on loan for the rest of the season to help ease their injury crisis at the back, according to The Guardian.

Caulker, 24, is currently on a season-long loan at Southampton and it would require Ronald Koeman’s side to agree to terminate the deal early in order for the defender to make the switch to Anfield.

The former Tottenham defender has struggled to make any impression at Southampton and hasn’t featured since turning in an abysmal performance in their 6-1 defeat to Liverpool in the Capital One Cup at the start of December.

Liverpool, on the other hand, are currently enduring an injury crisis which forced Jurgen Klopp to field a starting XI almost entirely comprised of kids in their 2-2 draw with Exeter in the FA Cup third round on Friday.

Despite desperately needing further reinforcement this month, Liverpool’s interest in Caulker comes as a huge shock, particularly given the manner of his performance against the Reds.

Caulker has only started one league game this season, so he would not even arrive at Anfield up to speed with the rigours of the Premier League.
