Newcastle eye move for rival showstopper

Newcastle are planning an audacious summer swoop for Sunderland goalkeeper Jordan Pickford, according to the Sunday Sun.

Pickford is widely expected to leave the Stadium of Light at the end of the season following the Black Cats’ relegation and his performances between the sticks have not gone unnoticed.

A host of Premier League teams, including Arsenal, Liverpool and Everton, have been linked with a big money move for the young goalkeeper, while a switch to RB Leipzig has also been mooted.

Newcastle, though, are keen to keep Pickford in the north-east and are supposedly gearing up to move for the 23-year-old as they look to strengthen sufficiently following their return to England’s top tier.

Despite Sunderland’s terrible campaign, Pickford has been a shining light for the Black Cats, with the England hopeful earning a WhoScored rating of 7.07, the fourth best of all goalkeepers to make more than 15 appearances in Europe’s top 5 leagues this season.

Sunderland should be able to command a top fee for Pickford, who is set to lead the Stadium of Light exodus after they dropped into the Championship on Saturday.
