Walker own goal secures United opening day win

Kyle Walker’s first half own goal handed Manchester United all three points in the opening game of the new Premier League season. The Tottenham right-back inadvertently put the ball into the back of his own net after Wayne Rooney was robbed of possession 12 yards from goal.

Spurs should have taken the initiative in the opening stages after Christian Eriksen lofted the ball over United debutant Sergio Romero, though couldn’t keep his effort down. The hosts were unable to threaten goalkeeper Michel Vorm, but were the livelier of the two sides in the final third in the opening 45 minutes, despite failing to register a shot on target.

Mauricio Pochettino’s side rarely tested Romero, but late on came close to drawing level, with Eriksen twice forcing the Argentine into action. However, despite the late pressure, United held out to secure all three points. Spurs, though, can count themselves unlucky that they were unable to come away with at least a point at Old Trafford.

The visitors had more shots on target (4 to United’s 1), yet came up against an inspired Romero in the United net, noted in his impressive WhoScored rating of 7.32. Romero was one of a handful of debutants who impressed, with Matteo Darmian (7.13), Morgan Schneiderlin (7.25) and WhoScored’s man of the match Toby Alderweireld (7.78) each performing well. What was clear in the encounter, however, is that United and Spurs both need to add new faces to the squad before the transfer window comes to a close.

Nevertheless, United secured the three points to get their campaign off to a winning start, though Spurs needn’t be too disheartened by a much-improved performance compared to last season’s visit to Old Trafford.
