Real Madrid want Atletico Madrid ace

Real Madrid have revived their interest in Atletico Madrid defender Jose Gimenez and are considering his €60m (£52.2m) release clause, claims Marca.

The European champions are on the market to sign a long-term replacement for captain Sergio Ramos, who turned 32 in March.

Madrid wanted to sign Gimenez in 2015 but opted against pursuing the Uruguay international due to their tense relationship with Atletico.

However, tensions have eased since then and now Madrid believe he represents good value in today’s market due to his release clause.

Gimenez struggled to nail down a regular starting berth under Simeone this season but it remains to be seen whether he would be open to a controversial switch.

Madrid have also considered Inter defender Milan Skriniar and Roma centre-back Kostas Manolas, but believe Gimenez is the most obtainable of the three.

Since August 2016, Atletico have a better win ratio in La Liga when Gimenez has not started (63.8%) compared to when he has (55.2%).
