Frenchman emerges as surprise Villa candidate

Remi Garde is one of the favourites to succeed Tim Sherwood as Aston Villa manager.

Sherwood was relieved of his duties at Villa Park following the 2-1 home defeat to Swansea City, the Villans' sixth in a row in the Premier League.

Four points from the opening 10 games leaves Villa bottom of the league, four points from safety, which was enough to convince the Villa board to sack Sherwood.

David Moyes and Brendan Rodgers were among those mooted as a possible successor to the Englishman at Villa Park, but Garde has emerged as the favourite to take over the reins at the Midlands club.

Garde has been out of work since he left Lyon last summer, with his win percentage during his three years in France a respectable 51.3%.

Having been linked with the once-vacant Newcastle post, the former Arsenal star now looks set to take charge at Villa, with some reports suggesting he could be announced as their new manager as early as Monday.
