Aston Villa sign Iceland’s Euro 2016 top goalscorer

Aston Villa have announced they have signed Birkir Bjarnason from Swiss giants FC Basel.

The Championship outfit have already announced they have signed James Bree from Barnsley and are poised to complete a third signing, believed to be Conor Hourihane, before the end of the day.

However, it is the arrival of Bjarnason that has caught fans by surprise and is actually quite a coup for Steve Bruce’s side.

Bjarnason, 28, was a fixture of Iceland’s shock Euro 2016 success and netted in their 5-2 defeat against France as they exited at the quarter final stage.

The 28-year-old has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal with Villa after Bruce’s side secured his services for an undisclosed fee.

“I’m delighted to have signed for Aston Villa,” he told the club’s official website. “It’s a very big club. I am now looking forward to getting out on the pitch and helping the team.”
