Arsene Wenger will reward Petr Cech with the captain’s armband next season if he decides to overlook Per Mertesacker, reports The Daily Mirror.
Mikel Arteta is currently club captain but his contract is due to expire at the end of the current campaign and while Mertesacker is the vice-captain there have been no guarantees he will take on the role full-time next season.
Cech, 31, joined Arsenal from London rivals Chelsea in a deal worth around £11m last summer and the shot-stopper has been widely credited for improving Arsenal’s winning mentality as they close in on their first league title in 12 years.
The Czech Republic international’s performances have been particularly impressive over the last month, in a period in which Arsenal have struggled for form in attack. In fact, he was named in the Premier League Team of the Month for January (7.6 rating).
