Athletic Club rising star signs new contract

Athletic Club have announced defender Yeray Alvarez has renewed his deal with the Spanish club until June 2022 with a release clause of €30m (£25.5m).

Alvarez has enjoyed a turbulent maiden campaign for the Athletic Club first team after joining the side in 2008 as a youngster that has seen him battle a potential life-threatening illness.

The 22-year-old was diagnosed with testicular cancer last year before having the affected testicle removed around the Christmas period and admits he is delighted to be given the chance to renew terms at his boyhood club.

“For me it is something great to renew for this club, which is where I have formed, I am very happy,” he told the club’s official website.

‘This end of the year has been very fast, everything that has happened to me. From the illness to the renewal. I’m always going to be there to help the team.

“I’m really comfortable with my team mates. We’re all friends, mates and we all enjoy playing together. Valverde is the one who call me up with the first team. We feel comfortable with him. The support given from all the people in these months it’s really valuable.
