Former Manchester City man set for Chelsea switch

Chelsea have moved a step closer to finding a replacement for Asmir Begovic as Thibaut Courtois’ backup as they look set to secure the services of free agent Willy Caballero, reports the London Evening Standard.

The Argentine is free to negotiate with new teams following his release from the Etihad Stadium and has also been linked with a move to Newcastle United.

However, the Magpies have made Pepe Reina their primary goalkeeping target this summer, thus allowing Chelsea the chance to snare Caballero.

The experienced goalkeeper dislodged Claudio Bravo as City’s number one on the back of a number of questionable performances from the Chilean, yet despite his solid showing at the back, was not offered a new contract as City confirmed the signing of Ederson Moraes from Benfica.

Chelsea boss Antonio Conte is keen to bring in a new backup for Courtois following Begovic’s £10m switch to Bournemouth, with the Bosnian shotstopper wanting first team football, despite securing a Premier League winners’ medal last season.
