Chelsea confirm the big money addition of Cucurella

Chelsea have confirmed the signing of full-back Marc Cucurella.

The Spaniard, who made 38 appearances in his debut campaign for the Seagulls last season, was voted their Player of the Season by both his teammates and the Brighton fans.

The 24-year-old joins Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly at Stamford Bridge in a deal worth in excess of £52m, becoming Brighton’s highest ever transfer fee received in the process.

Cucurella told Chelsea's official website: "I’m really happy. It’s a big opportunity for me to join one of the best clubs in the world and I’m going to work hard to be happy here and help the team."

New Chairman Todd Boehly has said this on the move: "Marc is an elite defender of proven Premier League quality and he further strengthens our squad going into the new season. We continue to work on and off the pitch, and we’re delighted Marc will be a part of the present and future at Chelsea."

For Brighton, Cucurella registered 93 tackles across 2021/22, which was beaten by only three players, and his high energy will be able to help bolster Chelsea’s squad as they look to compete for the Premier League and Champions League this season.
