West Ham midfielder Jack Wilshere has undergone ankle surgery and will be sidelined for up to six weeks.
Wilshere missed West Ham’s 3-1 win away to Everton on Sunday after struggling through the week with an ankle injury picked up in training.
The Hammers earned their first points of the season in Wilshere’s absence but it has now emerged the former Arsenal midfielder has gone under the knife and faces a long period out.
Wilshere penned a three-year deal with West Ham in the summer after his Arsenal contract expired at the end of last season but the 26-year-old has failed to hit the ground running.
The England international has endured an injury-plagued career and he has now suffered another set-back in his career just over a month into life at West Ham.
“West Ham United can confirm that Jack Wilshere has undergone minor ankle surgery,” a statement read on the club’s official website. “The operation was a straightforward procedure.
“The midfielder underwent the operation in London on Monday morning, with his surgeon confirming the procedure had gone to plan.”
While Wilshere is yet to score or register an assist for West Ham, the midfielder has displayed his dribbling ability, averaging more dribbles per league game than any other Hammer this season (2.5).
