Martial annoyed with lack of game time at United

Anthony Martial has revealed he is ‘annoyed’ by his lack of game time under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United this season.

The France international was a revelation in his debut campaign at United last season following a shock £36m switch from Monaco in September 2015 but has struggled to reproduce the kind of performances that thrilled supporters this time around.

Martial, 21, has struggled to cope with off-field distractions this season, which has been coupled by a lack of form and fitness and the forward has revealed his progress at the club this season is a hurdle that is becoming annoying to overcome.

“It’s annoying to be on the bench. It’s truly annoying but it’s a test you have to overcome and that’s how you progress,” Martial told SFR Sport, via The Guardian. “It’s difficult because all you want is to be able to help the team and, when you’re on the bench, you can’t. But these are choices and you have to accept it.

“People expect a lot of me but sometimes they forget I’m still young. Everyone can think what they want. It won’t change anything.”

Martial was not included in the United squad for their midweek win over Crystal Palace but is expected to return to the fold for Saturday’s trip to West Brom on Saturday, although these comments aren’t likely to go down favourably with Mourinho.

Since the start of last season Martial has scored more goals than any other United player in the Premier League (12).
