Sunderland striker out for three months

Sunderland striker Fabio Borini has been ruled out for three months with a groin injury, according to Sky Sports.

Borini’s injury has come at the worst possible time after the Black Cats failed to sign another striker before the transfer window shut on Wednesday.

The Italian striker is unlikely to appear again until 2017 and leaves them facing the prospect of battling the first half of the season with Jermain Defoe as their only recognised senior striker.

Since the start of last season only Defoe (17) has scored more goals in the Premier League for Sunderland than Borini (5).
