Martial waits on Mourinho's Manchester United future before signing new deal

Anthony Martial will not entertain contract talks with Manchester United until he knows what Jose Mourinho's future is at the club, claims The Sun.

Mourinho and Martial's relationship hit rock bottom during the summer after the United manager fined the Frenchman £180,000 for going AWOL on the club's pre-season tour of the US.

The United boss wanted to sell Martial in the summer and use that money to sign a forward more suited to his demands but the club's board overruled the Portuguese.

United chief-executive Ed Woodward believes Martial has everything to become one of the best players in the world and is desperate to avoid cashing in on the forward.

Martial became an instant fan favourite during his first season at the club but has failed to kick on since Mourinho was appointed manager in 2016.

The 22-year-old has entered the final 12 months of his current United deal but the Red Devils have an option to extend his stay by a further year.

Martial started the summer wanting to leave United to salvage his career but is now willing to stay on at the club on one condition after being won over by the board's desire to keep him.

Despite the fact Mourinho would like to sell Martial, United have offered Martial a fresh five-year deal in an attempt to secure his long-term services.

Martial is willing to put pen to paper on a new contract but will only do so if Mourinho leaves before the start of next season.

The former Monaco forward has only made one appearance for United this season and was hooked after 60 minutes in their 3-2 defeat away to Brighton last month.

Martial has scored more Premier League goals than any other United player since joining the club three years ago (24).

However, United have a far better win ratio under Mourinho in Premier League matches Martial has not started (62.8%) compared to games he has featured from the off (48.6%).
